Proceedings of 9th European Particle Accelerator Conference (EPAC 2004) (CD-ROM), p.1723 - 1725, 2004/07

After the success of energy recovery linac (ERL) for the superconducting free-electron laser (FEL) in the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI), the JAERI ERL-FEL has been upgrading for high-power and long-pulse operation. The new RF sources of CW mode for higher power for non-energy-recovery parts have been installed and tested for long-pulse operation. The properties of the superconducting linac required for the long-pulse operation were measured such as pressure in the cryomodule, vibration of frequency and piezo tuner response. The RF control systems have been also upgraded to reduce the fluctuation to less than 0.1% for amplitude and 0.1 deg for phase.

Required technologies of superconducting energy recovering RF linac-based free-electron lasers for large-scale and popular industrial applications

Minehara, Eisuke

Proceedings of ARTA 2004, p.75 - 76, 2004/00

The JAERI superconducting RF linac-based free-electron laser has successfully produced the tunable, 6% or more efficient, a few hundreds femtoseconds, and 2.34kW high average power laser light firstly. Here we discuss and report what kinds of the accelerator and free-electron laser technologies we need in order to make a large-scale and popular industrial FEL applications possible, to increase the average power drastically, to realize the JAERI FEL to be a non-ionizing radiation generating device, and to miniaturize the device volume and weight. In the discussion as a specific example of the large-scale and popular industrial applications, we discuss the nuclear energy related example, and the required technologies of the accelerator and non-accelerator related.

An energy-recovery linac (ERL) for a high-power free-electron laser (FEL) is under development in JAERI. We completed the construction of the ERL, and demonstrated the first energy-recover operation and FEL lasing in 2002. For realizing FEL lasing in 5-10kW average power, further upgrade of the ERL is carrying on, which includes reinforcement of the injector, replacement of the RF control system and so on. As future plans, we present possible quantum control of chemical reaction dynamics through a self-chirped FEL pulse, application of ERL technologies to high-flux photon sources in a wide range of photon energy from THz radiation to $$gamma$$-ray.

An intense ultrashort pulse is generated at the perfect synchronism of optical-resonator length in the JAERI far-infrared free-electron laser. At wavelength of 22.5 $$mu$$m, second-order optical autocorrelation measurements show that the FEL pulse duration is 250 fs and less than four optical cycles which is consistent with numerical calculation result. The pulse energy ranges up to 100 $$mu$$J. The second-hermonic generation in a 2 mm thickness Te crystal is used to provide the nonlinear autocorrelation signal. In the various desynchronism of optical-resonator length, the way of appearing of the sub-pulse corresponded to the calculation result well, too.
